Cultural Competition 2009 In 2009, AHEC invited pupils in London to take part in a competition which promised some fantastic prizes for the winners! To be in with a chance of winning, entrants had to submit a piece of work which highlighted a particular example of a financial or material contribution that has been made by Black or Minority Ethnic (BME) communities to the British Empire. There were three different categories for entries. Pupils could submit:
Finalists from each category were be chosen in two age groups: 5-11 and 12-19 years of age. Prizes were awarded to the best entry in each age group. The group with 5-11 years olds competed for the chance to win a family ticket to London Dungeons, whilst 12-19 year olds battled it out for an exclusive pair of Gucci Sunglasses! Both of these winners also received an England team photo signed by John Terry.
One entry however was crowned as the overall champion of the competition and received a fantastic Samsung Soul mobile phone!
AHEC enlisted the help of some notable individuals to be part of the official judging panel for the competition. The judges include Christine Borsah (Director of AHEC), Maerika Shenrwood (Hon. Senior Research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies London) and Martin Spafford (History Teacher in Waltham Forest). Entries had to be received by Friday 6th March 2009.
